Ben Henderson vs. Mark Bocek at UFC 129
Ben “Smooth” Henderson will fight Mark Bocek at UFC 129 on April 30, 2011 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario. It will be televised live on Pay-Per-View (PPV). This lightweight match-up will be Henderson’s first fight as part of the UFC since the UFC/WEC merger. His last fight was the loss by decision at WEC 53 in December 2010 against Anthony Pettis. There are critics who are questioning if the former WEC Lightweight Champion can overcome the “Showtime” kick that Pettis landed near the end of the fight in round 5 but, For more on Ben, check out our March 2010 interview with him. Good luck Smooth!

Dia Frampton to Compete on NBC’s The Voice
We can now count another mixed Korean who will compete on a reality TV show as Dia Frampton, of the indie pop rock band Meg & Dia, has been confirmed as a contestant on NBC’s new reality show, The Voice. The show premieres tonight Tuesday, April 26, 2011. She joins Super Bowl MVP Hines Ward of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and Joseph Goode of VH1’s Wedding Wars in the reality TV competition world. Here is the show’s info (from NBC’s The Voice Facebook Page): If you are a singer and you think you have what it takes, go to the casting website to register for auditions! We are looking for singers of ALL MUSICAL STYLES. 18 years and up with no age cap. If selected, you will be coached by music industry professionals, compete weekly in front of a panel of judges, and America will decide which singer will be worthy of the grand prize. But first singers must go through “Blind Audition” where the coaches will listen with their back towards singers. If a coach wants you on the show then they must commit to the singer as a coach. If more than one coach commits then the singer gets to choose their coach! We interviewed Dia and her sister Meg here on HalfKorean.com last month and the group just released their new full-length album, Cocoon, this month. The group had canceled tour dates this spring due to “obligations” that Dia had and now we know why. Go Dia, we’ll be rooting for you!

Celebrating 14 Years!
HalfKorean.com marked 14 years this month (April 2011). We’ve been around since 1997 and, for a website, that is a long time!
It is amazing to see how much has changed over the years and we’ve tried to keep up with the times. The site has never been flashy and will never win any design awards but we do try to focus on content in the form of interviews, features, stories and whatever else there may be to share and celebrate our mixed Korean experience.
So, for those of you that have been around from the beginning when it was called The Half Korean Page and hosted on GeoCities (By the way, does anyone else who was on GeoCities still remember their address? We do, we were in Tokyo/Towers…) all the way to today’s new visitors, we hope to continue to be a positive web presence for all mixed Koreans and whomever else stops by.
As we celebrate our 14 years we decided it would be fun to post a couple screen-shots of our old layouts, one from April 2000 and the other from April 2010. Unfortunately, we no longer have any of the old HTML files of the original site from 1997 (pre-HalfKorean.com domain name) and cannot locate them on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine (It doesn’t seem as though GeoCities communities were archived). So, the oldest we could pull up was from April 2000 when we officially became “HalfKorean.com” and were no longer hosted on GeoCities. The second screen-shot is from April 2010 right before we moved the website to the current WordPress-powered layout. This layout was the same from 2002-2010, so it obviously needed the update!

Tony Akins (전태풍) of KCC Egis in 2011 Korean Basketball League Finals
Tony Akins (전태풍) of the Korean Basketball League’s KCC Egis is currently playing in the 2011 KBL Finals. Akins and the KCC Egis are facing the Dongbu Promy for the KBL Championship. The best-of-seven Finals currently has Dongbu Promy up 2-1 in the series having beaten KCC Egis, 62-54, this past Wednesday. The first two games were split with Dongbu winning Game 1, 76-71, and KCC Egis taking Game 2, 87-67. He sustained an ankle injury in the second quarter of Game 3 that kept him out for most of the second half. Prior to Game 3, he had averaged 12.4 points per game and is an integral part of KCC Egis. Hopefully he’ll be ready to go for pivotal Game 4 which is scheduled for today, Friday, April 22, 2011 at 5:45PM KST. We wish Tony much success and hope he’ll be hoisting the KBL Championship very soon!
